EMDR: Healing trauma and overcoming emotional distress

If you are carrying the weight of past trauma, distressing memories, or chronic anxiety, you do not have to navigate it alone. Rusan Morgan Counselling provides professional EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy in Fernie, BC, helping clients safely process painful life experiences and rediscover emotional well-being.

As a trauma-informed Registered Clinical Counsellor, I integrate EMDR into my practice to offer a somatic, body-centered pathway to healing that goes beyond traditional talk therapy.

What is EMDR and how does it work?

EMDR therapy is an evidence-based psychological treatment designed to help the brain reprocess traumatic or distressing memories so they no longer cause emotional pain in the present.

When an individual experiences a traumatic event—such as an accident, abuse, a sudden medical loss like a miscarriage, or chronic childhood stress—the brain's natural processing system can become overwhelmed. The memory gets "stuck" in the nervous system, complete with the original sights, sounds, thoughts, and physical sensations.

During an EMDR session at Rusan Morgan Counselling, we use bilateral stimulation (such as side-to-side eye movements or gentle tapping) while briefly focusing on the distressing memory. This naturally stimulates the brain’s information-processing system, allowing the memory to be safely reprocessed.

The goal of EMDR is not to make you forget what happened, but to strip away the intense emotional charge. Once processed, the memory is successfully filed away in the past, allowing you to feel safe in your body today.

I respectfully acknowledge I work, live, and play in the unceded traditional territory of the Ktunaxa.
